Jan Van Der Veken (aka Fabrica Grafica) was born in Ghent, Belgium and still works and lives there. His main interest has always been in illustration and after graduating as a graphic designer and typographer from the St-Lucas Art Institute in 1999 he immediately started his design company “FABRICA GRAFICA”. He put’s his broad range of skills to good uses working in editorial illustration, poster and record sleeve design as well as working on murals, stamps, book covers, logos, hand lettering and combining them all in his free work. Jan’s work references classical Belgian comic strip language and the Atom Style, a trend that was popular in the 1950s (think the World Exhibition of 1958 in Brussels). This combination of the feel good atmosphere of comic strips and the positive attitude towards technology and unlimited possibilities of the future of the Atom Style is reflected in all of his work. Another important inspiration source are the travel sketch books Jan keeps when he is abroad. Adding this sense of Exoticism to his influences as well and the use of color gives his illustrations a bit of a retro feel, as if his work is drifting between the future and the past.
